Rare Case of Fetus-in-Fetu with Wilms’ Tumour Successfully Treated in a 5-Month-Old Infant

Extremely Complex Intra Abdominal Infantile Mass ( Fetus in Fetu with Nephroblastoma )

I had the unique clinical responsibility of treating a 5-month-old infant with an extremely rare combination of Fetus-in-Fetu (FIF) and Wilms’ tumour, a case that occurs in less than 1 in 500,000 births.

This complex surgery required meticulous resection, removing both the malformed fetal tissue and the affected kidney while ensuring the infant’s safety. The successful outcome was possible with
precise surgical planning, radiological inputs from Gopinath sir and seamless interdisciplinary collaboration between paediatric surgery and anaesthesia.

Cases like these not only push the boundaries of paediatric surgical practice but also underscore the importance of early imaging, timely intervention, and integrated care in saving young lives.

Grateful to Dr Bharathi Raja MD at Ambal Hospital for the early identification and prompt referral and Paediatric Anesthetist Dr Karthikeyan sir for his expertise and to the family for trusting us with their child’s care.
